Chamber Amarillo, the Harrington Street Quartet, Amarillo Little Theatre and Amarillo College Lamplight Theatre, Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, Amarillo Musuem of Art, Amarillo Botanical Gardens, Don Harrington Discovery Center and Space Theatre and the American Quarter Horse Heritage Center and Museum are some of the cultural entities.
In addition to the many cultural activities area residents enjoy, there are numerous opportunities to attend sport activities. Of course, Friday night football is big in the Texas Panhandle, West Texas A & M University boasts the Lone Star conference football champions and the Amarillo Dusters are the area’s arena football team. The Amarillo Gorillas Hockey plays a full schedule at the Amarillo Civic Center. The area is filled with many talented and winning volleyball and basketball teams.
For the sports participant, Amarillo TX real estate area boasts 2- 18 hole public golf courses, 54 tennis courts in 18 locations, 3 country clubs with 18 hole golf courses and tennis courts, 63 parks and recreation areas totaling 2880 acres, Lake Meredith National Recreation area, Palo Duro Canyon State Park and the Wonderland Amusement Park.
Educational opportunities abound with West Texas A & M University, Amarillo College, Wayland Baptist University and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.
Although located in the most northern part of Texas, the Amarillo TX real estate market enjoys sunny and party sunny days 351 days of the year. Our average temperature is a pleasing 57.2º and averages a little more than 15 inches of snow each year and 20.41 inches of rain. It is estimated the population of the greater metropolitan area of Amarillo was 223,025 in 2005 – nearly the perfect size city!
Even though the more populated coasts are experiencing downturns in the housing market, the Amarillo TX real estate market is strong and sure, with homes retaining and still gaining in value. From Jan – April 2008, the number of homes sold and average sales prices increased over 6%. There were 948 home sales, with an average home sales price of $147,874. Home listings increased a mere 3.8% over 2007 with 1241 homes on the market at the end of April 2008 – still a sellers market!
